Your wood carving is still adapting to its new form and surroundings.
As sculptures season small splits may appear as part of its drying out process, this is not a fault.
Most of the time these will close back up, there a few things you should do to care for it and reduce this as much as possible:
- Place your carving in a nice shaded spot and always out of direct sunlight, never leave next to a heat source.
- Keep outside, made from green wood these are designed to be outside. If you do choose to keep inside please find the coldest spot possible, cracks are more likely if kept inside.
- Oil regularly, your carving has been treated but will need to be topped up over time. Oil at least 3 times a year. Ideally tung oil or linseed oil. Available on Amazon or most hardware stores.
- Keep your carving on hard ground, preferably a large stone, flagging or decking. Do not keep on soil or grass, in boggy areas your carving will soak up the moisture.
